What Have You Been Feasting On? {Free Download!}

Are we feasting on Facebook and Instagram or are we feasting on God's Word? - ordinaryawesome.com

The other day I woke up, grabbed my phone off the charger, and feasted. Before brushing my teeth or having my coffee or breakfast… Before doing Bible study or praying… I feasted.

On Instagram.

I sat there in my pajamas, and flipped through everyone’s pictures.

It was so enjoyable in a mindless kind of way – so-and-so’s new piece of art, flowers from a wedding photo shoot, a new dish someone created, beautiful scenery…

And then I got to vacation pictures and women’s retreat pictures. Seriously – three different women I follow were on retreats.

That’s when it started to get ugly: “Well, how come they get to go? Who’s watching their kids? Don’t they have responsibilities? Other people always get to do fun things…”

It got me pretty crabby. That’s a great way to start the day, eh? Everyone loves to be greeted by a grumbling wife and mother…

The Richest of Fare

There is no question – Facebook (FB) and Instagram (IG) are breeding grounds for comparison and discontent. Maybe some of us should stay away from these outlets completely. But all of us need to reevaluate what our diet is – are we feasting on FB and IG or are we feasting on God’s word?

This reminds me of Isaiah 55:2:

Why spend money on what is not bread,
and your labor on what does not satisfy?
Listen, listen to me, and eat what is good,
and you will delight in the richest of fare.

When I start my day filling up on FB and IG, I’m filling up on what does not satisfy… Meanwhile, the richest of fare is waiting for me. That’s really stupid.

Not Suited Up

When I start my day on social media, not only am I wasting energy on what does not satisfy, I’m also not suiting up for battle. Ephesians 6:10-18 says:

10 Finally, be strong in the Lord and in his mighty power. 11 Put on the full armor of God, so that you can take your stand against the devil’s schemes. 12 For our struggle is not against flesh and blood, but against the rulers, against the authorities, against the powers of this dark world and against the spiritual forces of evil in the heavenly realms. 13 Therefore put on the full armor of God, so that when the day of evil comes, you may be able to stand your ground, and after you have done everything, to stand. 14 Stand firm then, with the belt of truth buckled around your waist, with the breastplate of righteousness in place, 15 and with your feet fitted with the readiness that comes from the gospel of peace. 16 In addition to all this, take up the shield of faith, with which you can extinguish all the flaming arrows of the evil one. 17 Take the helmet of salvation and the sword of the Spirit, which is the word of God.

18 And pray in the Spirit on all occasions with all kinds of prayers and requests. With this in mind, be alert and always keep on praying for all the Lord’s people.

If I start perusing social media without a heart and mind prepared for action, sword of truth raised, and shield of faith up, I am going to take some arrows. Not only that, when I’m comparing and coveting I’m definitely not alert and praying for the Lord’s people (v.18.) I need to be filling my mind with Scripture before I go to anything else. I love this quote from Ever Bitter Thing Is Sweet:

How Am I Filling My Mind With Scripture?

Here are some ideas:

  • memorizing Scripture
    • post some in the laundry room, by the kitchen sink, on the bathroom mirror to review while you fold clothes, do dishes, get ready for the day…
    • keep the Scripture verses you’re memorizing on index cards on a ring (like this) to carry with you
  • display Scripture around your home (naptimediariesshop.com)
  • regular prayer (oh man, this from Beth Moore will get you fired up about prayer…)
  • read Scripture throughout the day
    • keep your Bible open on the counter so you can read some when I walk by
    • use an app like She Reads Truth (in Google play or iTunes)
  • listen to Scripture using an audio Bible app on your phone or computer (YouVersion has an audio option)
  • listen to praise music

I’ve been working on this for a few months, and I’m so excited to share it with you. I’ve always had more success memorizing Scripture when it’s in the form of a song – I remember all kinds of verses from my childhood for that reason. That’s why I LOVE Seeds Family Worship. All of their songs are straight from the Bible, and great music. I’ve created a pack of Scripture memory cards that go along with their Seeds of Praise 3
album [affiliate link].

What are your ideas?

How do you keep yourself in the Word, rather than being sucked into comparing on social media? I’d love to hear from you in the comments!
